Privacy Policy

SFomo ("this app", at sfomo.ai, also reachable at sfomo.org and calendar.jchong.dev) is a project built and operated by Jonathan Chong. This policy explains what the app is, what data it handles, and how.

What SFomo is, and where it's headed

SFomo started as a personal tool for finding Bay Area dance, AI, music, exercise and community events. It is growing into a free, open directory of public events across the Bay Area that anyone — or any AI agent — can search and browse, with no account needed. Its only public face is the directory: event listings gathered from public sources, republished as a searchable website, a downloadable data file, and a read-only agent (MCP) endpoint.

Short version: SFomo has no accounts and stores nothing that identifies you. Your saved events stay in your own browser, a custom calendar lives entirely in its link, and visit counts are anonymous hashes that reset daily.

If the project later adds accounts or lets other people connect their own calendars, this policy will be updated first and any new use of personal data will require your explicit consent.

The public directory

Public listings are collected from event pages and feeds that their organizers have already made public (event platforms, venue and organizer websites, city and park calendars, and public calendar feeds). Each listing keeps only what is needed to find the event: title, date and time, venue/location, price, category tags, and a link back to the original listing, where the details and tickets live. We do not copy full descriptions or images.

The public data is free to use. Please keep the link back to each event's original listing, and be gentle with request volume (see robots.txt). The data is provided as-is, without warranty; always confirm details with the organizer.

Visitors to this website

You don't need an account to use SFomo, and it doesn't ask you for personal information unless you sign up for the weekly email (below). It sets no cookies of its own, shows no ads, and uses no third-party analytics or tracking scripts. To count visitors, the site's own server records one anonymous entry per visit: a one-way hash of your IP address and browser that changes every day (so it can't be linked across days or turned back into an IP), the site you came from (for example a share link or a referring domain), and whether you were on a phone or a computer. Using the Share button records only which share method was used, and finishing or skipping the welcome tour adds one to a daily count, with nothing else attached. Saving an event, or opening an event's own page from SFomo, adds one to that event's daily count (once per event per browser), which is how the Highlights tab knows what's popular; nothing about you is attached, not even the daily hash. The optional feedback box stores the text you write (and an email only if you choose to add one), with no IP address or other identifier; because it's anonymous, I can't reply unless you leave an email. A daily summary of these counts and any feedback is sent to the operator. The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes standard technical request data (such as IP address and browser type) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. Searches and filters you use run in your own browser against the public data file; they are not sent to us.

The weekly email

If you sign up for the weekly email, we store your email address, the city you picked (or, on the city chooser, the city you asked for), and the part of town and neighborhood you choose if you add them on the confirm page, along with when you signed up, confirmed or unsubscribed. No IP address or other identifier is stored with it. We use it only to send that city’s email (a welcome message now, then the weekly issue) and to count signups per city. We don’t sell, rent or share the list, except with the email delivery provider that sends the messages for us. Until you confirm your address you get at most the first three issues. Every email has an unsubscribe link that works at once; to have your address deleted entirely, write to admin@whatsupin.ai.

Saved events and calendar links

AI assistants and custom calendars

AI assistants can search SFomo through its read-only MCP endpoint (setup). Requests to it aren't logged or stored. To limit bulk harvesting, a counter keyed to the requesting IP address is kept in Cloudflare's cache for up to about an hour, then discarded.

If you ask your assistant to create a custom calendar, the conversation about your interests stays in your assistant (its provider's privacy policy applies there). SFomo receives only the filters the assistant chooses to send (for example “salsa, SF, Friday evenings”) and stores none of them: the filters are packed into the calendar link itself, and SFomo rebuilds the calendar from the link each time your calendar app refreshes it. That means anyone you share the link with can read those filters. If you open the link on SFomo, your browser keeps a copy of it so the calendar shows in your Saved tab; that copy stays in your browser (like saved events) and is never sent to us. To stop using it, remove the calendar from your calendar app, and choose “Remove from this browser” on SFomo.

Tips and ticket links

If SFomo offers a tip jar, payments are handled by the payment provider (Stripe), which collects your payment details under its own privacy policy; SFomo receives only what the provider shares with sellers, such as the amount and any name or email you enter. Some ticket links (Ticketmaster, SeatGeek) may be affiliate links; when you click one, the ticket site and its affiliate network may set their own cookies to credit the referral. SFomo receives commission reports, not information about you.

Google Calendar data

Since October 8, 2026, SFomo does not connect to any Google account. It reads only calendars that their owners have published as public feeds (for example a venue's or community's public event calendar), through Google's public calendar addresses, and treats them like any other public source above. Earlier versions connected the operator's own Google account with the read-only calendar.readonly scope; that access is no longer used, and the operator's own calendar was never shown on the website or published.

Any Google user data SFomo received through Google APIs was handled under the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements: used only for the operator's private archive and the directory described here, never sold, shared, used for advertising, or used to train AI models.

AI use

Public event listings may be tagged or ranked with the help of automated software, including AI models. SFomo does not train AI models on any data it holds.

Data retention and deletion

Past public listings are kept in a private archive to study trends and improve coverage. Anonymous visit counts and feedback are kept to track how the site is used. To request deletion of any data already collected, contact the email below.
